The explorer
The file tree — opening, creating, renaming, moving and deleting, and what it does while the agent works.
The tree in the left sidebar. Your project's folders and files, folders first, alphabetical, with the project name in capitals at the top.
Click a file to open it. Click a folder to unfold it and show it in the 3D view; click just the little arrow to unfold it without going anywhere. The top row is your whole project and never folds away.
Drag the panel's right edge to resize it, or collapse it entirely with the small button at the top
of the tree — it leaves a thin strip you click to bring it back. Ctrl+B slides it away and back.
Icons and badges#
Files get an icon for their language, folders get one chosen from the folder's name. A file type Semantix doesn't recognise gets a plain grey dot — it's still indexed and still opens.
A red number on the right of a row means syntax errors: the file's own count, or for a folder, everything underneath it. The name turns red with it. Hover for the exact count.
Getting around#
Scroll a long tree and the folders you're inside stay pinned at the top as breadcrumbs, up to three deep. Click one to jump back to it.
Opening a file from anywhere — a search result, the 3D view, the agent — selects it here and unfolds whatever it takes to show it.
↑ ↓ move, → opens a folder, ← closes it or jumps to the parent, and typing letters jumps to
the first matching name. Enter opens what's focused.
Selecting more than one#
Shift+click takes a range, Ctrl+click adds and removes individual rows. Delete, cut, copy and
drag all act on the whole selection.
Opening a file clears the selection, so gather your rows and act on them before clicking anything else.
Creating, renaming, deleting#
Right-click for the menu. Folders offer New File and New Folder; right-clicking the empty space below the tree creates at the project root.
- New File — type a name. Typing
sub/deep/thing.tscreates the folders on the way. - Rename —
F2, or the menu. The current name comes up selected, so typing replaces it. - Delete File / Delete Folder — the
Deletekey, or the menu. It asks first, listing what's about to go for a multi-selection.
Note
Delete is permanent. Files are unlinked and folders removed with everything inside them. There is no trash and no undo. The confirmation dialog is the only thing standing between you and gone.
Note
If a create or rename fails — usually because the name is already taken — nothing appears on screen. The tree simply doesn't change. If a new file doesn't show up, that's why.
Moving and copying#
Drag a row onto a folder to move it there, or onto the empty space below the tree to move it to the project root. Dragging one row of a multi-selection moves all of them.
Cut, Copy and Paste are in the menu and on Ctrl+X / Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V. Paste drops
into the focused folder, or into a focused file's folder, or the project root if nothing is focused.
This clipboard is Semantix's own — it doesn't carry to other applications and doesn't survive a restart. Cut rows aren't marked in any way.
Note
Moving or copying onto a name that already exists doesn't warn you — it quietly makes
App copy.tsx. And copying a folder copies everything in it, node_modules and .git
included, which can be a great deal more than you meant.
The rest of the menu#
- Open File, and Collapse / Expand on a folder.
- Copy Name, Copy Relative Path, Copy Absolute Path.
- Reveal in File Manager — opens your system file manager with the item selected.
- Open in Terminal (folders) — starts a shell in that folder and opens the panel.
- Run in Browser — only on
.html,.htmand.svg. Serves the file and opens your browser.
The same menu appears when you right-click a node in the 3D view, and on editor tabs.
What you won't find here#
There's no duplicate, no "open to the side", no collapse-all, no refresh button, no sort control, no filter box, and no way to show hidden files. There's no inline rename — renaming is always the dialog — and you can't drag files in from outside the application.
What's hidden#
The tree shows what Semantix indexed, and the indexer skips a standard list so your project looks
like your project rather than like its dependencies: everything starting with a dot, anything your
.gitignore excludes, and the usual heavy folders — node_modules, target, dist, build,
.next, venv, __pycache__, coverage, vendor and their neighbours.
There is no file-type whitelist. An unusual extension is still indexed and still shown.
While the agent works#
The tree follows along. When the agent starts writing a file, the folders leading to it unfold and the file is revealed the moment it lands — including files that didn't exist a second earlier. When it reads a file, that file is revealed too.
Only the conversation you're actually looking at can move your tree; an agent working in another chat won't yank it around.
When a run finishes, the tree tidies itself — a turn that touched five folders leaves it fanned open, so it folds back to a single path, keeping the deepest folder still open and closing the rest. If you'd opened something deeper by hand, that's what survives.
Files the agent creates and deletes appear and disappear on their own, and so do changes made outside Semantix entirely.
Note
The follow control in the chat toolbar governs the 3D camera and whether files open in the editor. It does not govern this: the tree unfolds and reveals whatever the agent writes even with follow switched fully off.
Note
Renaming or moving a file that's open in the editor closes its tab rather than following it. Deleting a folder closes the tabs for everything inside it. Reopen from the tree.
